Ismailis in East Africa by Ibrahim

“The drought and water shortage had remained the buzzwords in Kutchh and Kathiawar and weather condition had taken a heavy toll onto the economy of the entire region. The people therefore moved elsewhere in search of subsistence. The Ismaili migrants left their Indian homeland and arrived in East Africa. The early reported arrivals took place in 1815 in Tanganyika. In fact, the Indian Ismailis came to Africa with entrepreneurial skills in their blood, mercantile nature in their brains and immense calibre to labour in their muscles, but with empty pockets. The first Jamatkhana was built in Zanzibar in 1838. The new Jamatkhana at Nairobi was opened on January 29, 1920, whose foundation was laid by Sir Charles Bawaring, the acting governor and commander-in-chief. Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah for the first time paid the visit of Zanzibar between June 28, 1899 and September 18, 1899, Bagamoyo between September 20, 1899 and September 22, 1899 and Dar-es-Salam between September 26, 1899 and September 29, 1899.

The Ismailis scattered in almost 550 centers in East Africa. In 1955, the Imam called these Ismailis as a “Nation of Shopkeepers” and went on to say, “I am proud that my spiritual children are a nation of shopkeepers, just as England was proud and flattered when Napoleon described the English as a nation of shopkeepers.” Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika and Zanzibar are the four territories that go to constitute what was known as British East Africa. In Kenya, the Ismailis reside in Mombasa, Nairobi and Kisumu. In Uganda, most of them live in Jinja and Kampala. In Tanganyika, now Tanzania, most of the Ismaili are populated in Dar-es-Salaam, Tabora, Tanga, Mwanza, Dadoma and M’baya. In Zanzibar, the Ismailis also live in Pemba etc.

Triglachromis otostigma Trig

Triglachromis otostigma Trig

$34.99

Triglachromis otostigma is an oddity from the Burundi region of lake Tanganyika. These fish are peaceful and non-aggressive feeding on diatoms and invertebrates in the muddy bottom. They have long bodies, rounded faces, and muted yet attractive coloration, typically dusky grey-brown with metallic blue accents. Males may be pale blue over all. These fish have impressively long pelvic fins and a dark spot on the operculum.

Astatotilapia burtoni

$9.99

Astatotilapia burtoni is a colorful mouthbrooding Tanganyikan. Adult males develop blue, green, and yellow metallic body color which can change depending on locale, aquarium conditions and mood of the individual. Burtoni inhabits shallow slow moving waters of rivers and swamps surrounding Lake Tanganyika. Provide rockwork in the aquarium for males to establish territory. Temperament of these fish is generally very agreeable with tankmates and they will spawn readily when kept under favorable conditions and in groups.

Paracyprichromis nigripinnis Neon Blue Cichlid – Juvenile

$19.99

The Neon Blue Cichlid is found throughout Lake Tanganyika. It is not a common import has been on the list of rare and interesting fish for a long time. It is a very swift moving beauty that has a mild disposition likes to be kept in groups. It can be kept in a Tanganyikan community with other non-aggressive species. Feed this species a varied and vitamin rich diet for the best color and health. A tank with a sandy substrate and rocky decoration will suit these fish well.

Cyphotilapia frontosa Seven Stripe Frontosa - Juvenile

Cyphotilapia frontosa Seven Stripe Frontosa – Juvenile

$16.99

Cyphotilapia frontosa is a large but fairly peaceful cichlid from the heavily alkaline waters of Lake Tanganyika, where these fish are often found in depths of up to 100 feet. Most have a beautiful soft-blue color with wide, black stripes but the number of stripes and the body coloration can vary depending on the region of the lake. The fins of the Frontosa can become very long and elaborate, especially in males. Males also develop large bump on the forehead. These fish grow to be about 12 inches, and will need plenty of room, so it is not suggested that they be housed in anything less than a 100 gallon. For the most part, Frontosa’s are peaceful. They will eat smaller fish and tankmates, however, as this is part of their natural diet. They will need plenty of protein in their diet, with large cichlid pellets and freeze-dried or frozen treats like krill periodically. Tank decor should resemble the rocky Tanganyika landscape, with plenty of open swimming area for this large fish. Frontosa’s are mouth brooders and are relatively easy to breed as long as tank conditions are right. The parents will look after the free-swimming fry for a short amount of time before they are left on their own.

Neolamprologus tretocephalus Five-bar Cichlid - Large

Neolamprologus tretocephalus Five-bar Cichlid – Large

$16.99

Five-Barred Cichlids look very much like frontosas, having light blue bodies and five wide, black bars. They dwell in rocky reefs of Lake Tanganyika, but unlike their large cousins, they tend to be very aggressive, staking out large territories and defending them vehemently. These fish are carnivores and will need a varied meaty diet consisting of flake or pellet and meaty frozen and freeze-dried treats. Tretocephalus like lots of rock and lots of space, so a fairly large tank is a necessity. It is recommended that they be kept as pairs in a species tank due to the incredible aggression they exhibit towards tank mates as they mature.

Cyprichromis leptosoma Slender Cichlid

Cyprichromis leptosoma Slender Cichlid

$19.99

The sardine-shaped leptosoma is found throughout the eastern coast Lake Tanganyika with many attractive variants. This particular cichlid is actually a schooling, open water fish, and requires plenty of open swimming areas. Keep them in groups of 8 to 12 or more fish, if possible. Provide a large rock formation and a lid as well, for security. Keep Cyps with similar medium-sized cichlids, though nothing overly aggressive, as they are generally peaceful. They are maternal mouth brooders that spawn in the water column instead of sediment or rock. Feed them a variety of meaty foods, preferably frozen, though they should accept flake or pellet as well. Their primary diet in the wild is zooplankton.

Synodontis petricola Pygmy Synodontis - Small

Synodontis petricola Pygmy Synodontis – Small

$12.99

Synodontis petricola is an attractive cat from the alkaline waters of Lake Tanganyika. It has pale tan or gray coloration with lots of small black spots and black fins that are edged in white. Synodontis catfish typically require water that is well-oxygenated and has a relatively strong current. This can be achieved by using powerheads or a spray bar water return attachment on a canister filter. Provide hiding places situated in areas of heavy current for shelter. Most synodontis catfish are omnivorous, and should be offered both meaty foods and vegetation. They are peaceful fish, and can be kept in most community and some African cichlid aquariums. Synodontis are, for the most part, nocturnal fish. They may become more active in the aquarium during the day over time but will come out of hiding the most during the night. A very well planted, dimly lit aquarium will encourage them to come out more often.

Neolamprologus cylindricus - Juvenile

Neolamprologus cylindricus – Juvenile

$9.99

Neolamprologus cylindricus are very slender, torpedo shaped fish. They have a tan body coloration with dark brown vertical bars running the length of their body. Their fins are normally tipped in blue color and show varying amounts of white dots. Male and female Neolamprologus cylindricus are indistinguishable, so the best way to obtain a breeding pair is to house at least 4 to 5 of them and allow them to pair off. Like many of the African cichlids, they will accept flake and pellet food soon after arriving in the aquarium. Most will also accept frozen food as a supplemental treat. Cylindricus are rock dwelling cichlids that should have plenty of hiding places and caves in order to observe them as you would in their natural habitat. Tankmates should be chosen from Lake Tanganyika and may consist of Calvus, Leleupi, or the various shell dwellers.
