Paratilapia polleni , the Small-spot Madagascar Cichlid, is a rare offering as it is endangered in the wild. These cichlids are dark with irregularly shaped white spots. They are often confused with the Large Spot Cichlid, once thought to be a regional variant or seperate species known as Paratilapia bleekeri , the Large Spot Cichlid. The Large Spot Cichlid is thought to be extinct in the wild and these two variants should not be kept together to avoid hybridizataion. They are popular with aquarists due to their outgoing personalities and bold nature, much like oscars. They will need a meaty diet and plenty of cover like rocks and wood, while still maintaining free space in the aquarium for adults to swim freely.

These beautiful mbuna, or rock-dwelling cichlids were one of the first species exported from Lake Malawi. The Rusty Cichlid has a rounder head and the basic shape of a Pseudotropheus cichlid. Males usually have intense rust-coloration around their head and violet-blue on the flanks. They are not aggressive towards most tankmates, but may show aggression with other males, especially in the presence of females. They are mouthbrooders, meaning the female holds the eggs and young fry in her mouth for protection. Feed a diet of cichlid flakes, or pellets and supplemental spirulina . They enjoy a tank with plenty of rockwork to explore.
